Gr. 4 Elementary String Curriculum

Musical Storytelling

Dylan and Bono, blues and rap, character development and conflict resolution, voice and mood…We’ll listen to, discuss, analyze, and review songs, as well as write and perform our own. We’ll learn and practice techniques that will help us become better storytellers. In the process, we’ll also improve our listening, speaking, writing, and critical thinking skills. Music Composition
by Kristofer KraulIn this lesson, students will compose unique short musical pieces using a paper and pencil method as well as a digital composition software like Finale or Sibelius on the computer. Students will then evaluate the differences between manual and digital composition and then reflect on what the music composition experience must have been like for the classic composers who did not have this technology available to them. At the end of this lesson, students will have created a short hand-written song, and a 2 minute long song using Finale or Sibelius.
World Cultures and Music
by Elise MarkStudents will learn about how music can reflect a culture's traditions. They will also be able to identify different instruments these cultures use, and classify them into categories.
Musical Styles and Major Composers
by Elise MarkStudents will learn about 3 different musical styles in the lesson: Classical, Romantic, and jazz. Along with learning styles through listening and reviewing musical characteristics, they will also be able to identify some major composers related to each style.
